Developers Talk
From Truth in Numbers: The Wikipedia Story
Contents |
[edit] Intro
This is where the developers of this wiki discuss the logistical questions and moral issues faced in creating a tool to allow the public to have a hand in the making of the documentary film Truth in Numbers: The Wikipedia Story. Inevitably, philosophical dilemmas will arise in the building of this site (they already have in fact). We will be making decisions on how the site will be laid out as it evolves, how much graphic representation should be present, which pages should be editable, and by whom, etc. We invite your feedback.
[edit] About the Developers
This site uses the Mediawiki Engine. The web developers and designers of this wiki, Lauren Scime and Jeremy Anderson, run San Francisco design firm, Object Adjective.
In addition to web design and development, both have backgrounds in art, art theory, circuit bending and general geekery.
"As Wiki enthusiasts, we were quick to jump on board the project and lend a
hand with the site."

[edit] Updates
Updates to this page will be made regularly, so check back and let us know what you think!
One of the main considerations we face in puting together this wiki, is that of visual layout and design. There are several schools of thought we face when making decisions about graphic layout. The first being a hands-off approach, sticking to default templates and the recognized visual treatments people have become familiar with, in regards to wiki sites. The second, of course, is to develop a more stylized approach, with an aim to brand the site and documentary.
The questions comes down to control, or the illusion of control. How much control is necessary, how much is helpful? Maybe none. Those of you who have followed this site so far, have noticed changes. We will document these changes here, as the site continues to evolve. If for no other reason, it should be fun.

We just uploaded changes for V. 1.0.3 of this wiki. Most notable changes in this version, as opposed to 2.0.2 is the incorporation of the new logo. We are currently developing a series of logo concepts for use in the film and the wiki. A history of previous version of the wiki and logo designs are available here in screen shots and will be continuously updated as the project evolves.

Truth in Numbers Wiki (this puppy right here) gets featured in Wikia's The Daily Edit for it's high level of customization and CSS design. The wiki is noted for it's custom navigation and side bar and mailing list signup form.
